I wanted to put together a quick article to help anyone who may be searching for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) internships or some ways to boost their resume! Sometimes it can be hard to find opportunities, but these websites are a great place to start.
In order to make this list easier to use, I have included a key letter at the end of each entry to show whether the opportunities are for high school students (H), undergraduate students (U), or graduate students (G).
1. Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) – This is a program funded by the National Science Foundation that provides paid research internships at a number of different universities. They offer opportunities in a variety of STEM fields including biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. H+U
2. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) – This program is put on by the US Army and provides apprenticeships to undergraduates and high school students. Mainly science and engineering based, this program offers a few different opportunities which matches students with practicing DoD scientists to conduct research and get mentoring and training in STEM. H+U
3. Zintellect – This is a great site sponsored by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) and Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). This is actually how I found my internship with the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR)! They post hundreds of internships, fellowships, and scholarships that are funded by both government and private organizations. They also offer opportunities in all STEM related fields. H+U+G
4. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) – The CDC is a great resource for all grade levels interested in research related to public health. This includes toxicology, epidemiology, pharmacology, and even law. The site breaks down opportunities by schooling level and even has opportunities for medical school students. H+U+G
5. National Cancer Institute – While specific to cancer research, NCI offers a number of fellowship and internship opportunities for all ages. Different opportunities differ in the skills used such as bioinformatics, lab research, and communications – but all connect with the center’s core cancer research. H+U+G
6. Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) – This is an amazing program put on by the Department of Defense that offers a unique type of fellowship. Awardees of this fellowship receive annual stipends while in school, a DoD mentor, attend summer internships, and even get job placement after school. U+G
Between all of these programs I bet you can find a STEM internship opportunities that fits your interests. Good luck applying!
